Synopsis

The story follows Inkle, an ambitious Englishman who ventures into the New World seeking wealth. During his journey, he encounters Yarico, a kind and resourceful woman who saves him from danger. Despite their cultural differences, the two develop a bond, and Yarico falls deeply in love with Inkle. However, once they return to an English settlement, Inkle faces a moral dilemma: he realizes he can sell Yarico into slavery to secure a financial gain that will enhance his standing back home. This betrayal shocks Yarico, who trusted him and risked her life to help him. In the end, Inkle's greed overshadows his affection, and he coldly betrays Yarico for his own benefit. Through the juxtaposition of Inkle's self-interest and Yarico's selfless love, Colman critiques the moral decay of individuals driven by materialism. The opera highlights how colonial exploitation impacts personal relationships, emphasizing the human costs of such greed and inhumanity.
