Throughout her career, she wrote under her maiden name, as well as the pen name David Lyall, and later adopted the name Mrs. Burnett Smith. Swan was remarkably productive, publishing over 200 novels, serials, and short stories between 1878 and her passing. Her works largely focused on the complexities of romantic relationships and the lives of women, resonating with a wide readership. In addition to her literary output, Swan was active in the Scottish literary scene and contributed to various journals and publications. She was a staunch advocate for women's rights and often used her writing to explore the roles and struggles of women in society. Swan's work earned her recognition, and she was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for her contributions to literature.
