About The Translator: Nathaniel Brassey Halhed (17511830) was an English orientalist and colonial administrator. He is best known for his translation of A Code of Gentoo Laws, a key work on Hindu law. Halhed also contributed to early studies of Sanskrit, publishing a grammar of the language. Joining the East India Company, he worked in Bengal, influencing British understanding of Indian culture and law. Halhed's scholarly contributions bridged Western and Eastern intellectual traditions during the British colonial era.
