‘At 34, I have spent almost half my life trying not to be defined by a single night in 2008.’
In the years after 26/11, Aakash Karkare tries to move on in a country that will not let him forget the death of his father, Hemant Karkare, during the Mumbai terror attack.
Aftermath: Life in the Shadows of Headlines and History charts a different kind of coming-of-age story, one shaped by private grief that becomes inescapably public.
What happens to those who live in the shadow of history?
In 2008, 17-year-old Aakash Karkare’s life cleaved into two: before and after. This memoir depicts the next 17 years of his life and his struggle to move on from that event and not be marked by what others always describe as tragedy. By taking a scalpel to memory, Aftermath traces a decade marked by loss, displacement, and slow repair.
Inside this book:
🍃A coming-of-age memoir: A poignant reflection on growing up in the long shadow of tragedy.
💔Private grief, public memory: The struggle to reclaim personal space when loss becomes national memory.
🌍India’s political and emotional landscape: Insight into the nation’s collective memory and the burden of heroism.
💫Grief and identity: The difficulty of coming to terms with the past while navigating early adulthood.
💬Healing and hope: A compassionate meditation on memory, resilience, and rediscovering meaning after loss.
A story beyond headlines
• A powerful, introspective memoir about grief, love, and finding your own voice.
• A rare, human perspective on the aftermath of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.
• Combines personal storytelling with sharp social insight into how public tragedy shapes private lives.
• For readers of reflective non-fiction, contemporary Indian memoirs, and stories of courage and recovery.
A universal story of resilience
With clarity, compassion and emotional restraint, Aftermath asks what it means to come of age in the shadow of a terrorist event, and the struggles to forge an identity when the story of your family belongs to everyone else.
At its core, Aftermath is a depiction of what happens to the people inside news stories after the cameras have been turned off. More than a memoir, this is a universal story of love, memory, and resilience in the face of history’s weight.
