"Lawyer-politician Manish Tewari, in his book, Decoding a Decade, chooses to comment on controversies that cropped up during 2006-2016. In doing so, he exposes the underbelly of Indian politics. Tewari’s questions are provocative. He asks why India has not been able to get rid of its image as a wimp state in dealing with terrorism? Was President Pratibha Patil, who commuted the death sentence of 19 and rejected three, diffident about capital punishment for religious reasons? Did President Kalam say that there was a social and economic bias in the award of capital punishment? The Right, the Left and the Centre—all political dispensations will see red in A Faustian Bargain, which questions whether the Indo-US Civil Nuclear Deal actually protects our national interest with Indian money paying for a nuclear accident in India. Tewari’s articles reflect various trends in domestic and international political practices and need to be wed in the context of the popular perspective at a given point of time. Yet, there are pieces that defy party lines. What if Germany, Austria, Greece and Italy set up controls on their borders to stop the inflow of refugees ? Fortress Europe explores the possibility of the multitudes turning eastwards to land up at our Wagah border. In a country where 900 million people are eligible to vote and there are 930,000 voting centres, in Rebooting Democracy, Tewari suggests that voting on the Internet may be a solution for the super-inflated egos of the educated elite who consider it below their dignity to stand in the polling booth line. He says, the attempted mutilation of the mo Udta Punjab highlights the draconian powers vested in the Censor Board that drives filmmakers around the bend. Here is Manish Tewari with his thinking cap on.
