The Maratha Empire and in its later years also known as the Maratha Confederacy, was a Hindu state of India which existed from 1674 to 1818. It was founded by Chhatrapati Shivaji. The most important challenge to the decaying Mughal power came from the Maratha Kingdom which was the most powerful of the succession states. In fact, it alone possessed the strength to fill the political vacuum created by the disintegration of the Mughal Empire. Moreover, it produced a number of brilliant commanders and statesmen needed for the task. But the Maratha sardars lacked unity, and they lacked the outlook and programme which were necessary for founding an all-India empire. The Rise of Marathas in the 17th century is an important event in the History of India. It is said that Marathas were hybrids of Aryans and Dravids. Perhaps ‘Maraiha’ word is originated from ‘Ratha’ or ‘Maharatha’ or ‘Rashtra’. ‘Ratha’ or ‘Maratha’ or ‘Rashtra’ etc. words were used for that state which was situated in South India like triangles. Shivaji’s legacy was to vary by observer and time, but began to take on increased importance with the emergence of the Indian independence movement, as many elevated him as a proto-nationalist and hero of the Hindus. Particularly in Maharashtra, debates over his history and role have engendered great passion and sometimes even violence as disparate groups have sought to characterise him and his legacy. This book deals with history of rise and progress of power of Maratha confederacy.
