Large-scale decentralized systems organized in overlay networks are complex to manage. Such systems integrate organizational complexity in the application-level resulting in low abstraction and modularity in their services. This PhD thesis introduces a multi-level conceptual architecture for overlay services. An overlay service is a large-scale decentralized system organized in overlay networks that provides generic application capabilities.

Dr. Evangelos Pournaras is a postdoctoral researcher in the Network Architectures and Services (NAS) group within the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. Evangelos has published over 14 papers in peer-reviewed international conferences and journals. He has been member in technical program committees of international conferences and workshops. The focus of his research is the self-management of decentralized systems and their application.
He continued and completed his PhD studies at Delft University of Technology after moving from VU University Amsterdam. His internship work at IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in the USA contributed to the Pacific Northwest Smart Grid Demonstration Project and provided him invaluable industry experience.
Evangelos holds a MSc with distinction in Internet Computing from University of Surrey, UK and a BSc on Technology Education and Digital Systems from University of Piraeus, Greece. His BSc thesis concerns the design and development of JautOGL, a cornerstone effort on Java game development with an international popularity. JautOGL was presented at the JAZOON conference and has been extensively referenced in books and online development communities.
