'A Long Loving Look' is a monumental retrospective of thirty years of analog photography by Mark Rietveld, capturing the soul of the Antwerp underground alongside the quiet beauty of everyday life. Shaped as a rhythmic montage, the book reflects his patient and unobtrusive gaze, revealing performers, spectators, and the fleeting moments in between. Drawn from an archive of over 50,000 images, this posthumous monograph distills his work into a tactile and expansive visual record. Both tribute and document, it offers a profound insight into a photographer for whom the entire world was a subject of wonder.

Mark Rietveld was a photographer who captured the subcultural life in Antwerp. He passed away in 2022. Soon after his death, his friends and his ex-partner came together in honour and memory of the artist to publish this book 'A long loving look'. They invited artist Nico Dockx to compile his archive into a photobook. In 2024 this was finally achieved and released during Antwerp Art Weekend at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts with an exhibition of his work.
'A LONG LOVING LOOK' – MARK RIETVELD
Observing the world with patience and quiet intensity.
'A Long Loving Look' is the posthumous monograph of Belgian photographer Mark Rietveld (1969–2022), a central figure in the Antwerp cultural scene for three decades. This extensive publication serves as a rhythmic montage and a profound tribute to Rietveld’s unique perspective ― a “long, loving look” that observed the world with patience and quiet intensity. Known for his unobtrusive presence at concerts and art openings, Rietveld captured not only the performers but also the spectators, the atmosphere, and the fleeting, still moments in between.
The book was curated and edited by Nico Dockx and Janneke Hertoghs, who sifted through a vast archive of over 50,000 analog photographs to distill thirty years of work into 344 pages. The result is a tactile visual record featuring approximately 300 black-and-white and 32 color images, ranging from raw subcultural portraits to tranquil nature scenes and intimate domestic life. This monograph is an essential document of Antwerp’s subcultural history and a celebration of a photographer for whom the entire world was a subject of wonder.
MARK RIETVELD – BIO

Paperback. Etat : New. Mark Rietveld (1969-2022) was known in Antwerp for his photography in which he photographed the underground music scene and art world. At concerts, Mark paid equal attention to what was happening on the periphery of the stage, his camera unobtrusively at the ready, in between chatting here and there. He was part of the furniture he had chosen as his subject. A few days after such an evening, a careful selection appeared online, giving those absent a glimpse of what they had missed. For those who delve further into his oeuvre, you will find a photographer for whom the whole world could be a wondrous subject: his archive is full of hushed moorland scenes, torn hoarfrost floors, still lifes, cats, parks in the snow, timeless figures in Prague or Paris and domestic scenes, . Mark photographed, in short, with a great deal of love, his entire biotope. N° de réf. du vendeur LU-9789464002416
