Wetenschappelijke publicatie over de geschiedenis van het opgraven en verzamelen van Egyptisch textiel

Door het droge klimaat is in Egypte een uitzonderlijk rijk erfgoed aan antiek textiel bewaard gebleven. Sinds 1996 voert de internationale studiegroep Textiles from the Nile Valley onderzoek uit naar deze Romeinse, Byzantijnse en vroeg-islamitische textielvondsten, waarvan vele hun weg vonden naar Europese en Noord-Amerikaanse museumcollecties.

De studiegroep, bestaande uit curatoren, archeologen, textielrestauratoren en wetenschappers, organiseert een tweejaarlijkse conferentie in het hoofdkwartier van Katoen Natie in Antwerpen en publiceert een serie van unieke boeken over het belang van het Egyptische textiel.

In dit nieuwe deel worden de bevindingen gebundeld van het elfde congres, dat plaatsvond van 25 tot 27 oktober 2019. De focus ligt op de geschiedenis van het opgraven en verzamelen van het textiel, die teruggaat tot het begin van de negentiende eeuw.

Het boek bevat achttien tekstbijdragen over recent veldwerk, conserveringsbehandelingen en wetenschappelijk onderzoek wereldwijd, met medewerking van grote universiteiten en van musea zoals het Victoria & Albert Museum in Londen en de Hermitage in Sint-Petersburg.

Publicatie naar aanleiding van het twaalfde internationale wetenschappelijke congres van Textiles from the Nile Valley van 12 tot 14 november 2021 in Antwerpen.

Scientific publication on the history of excavating and collecting Egyptian textiles

Its dry climate means that Egypt boasts an exceptionally rich heritage of preserved ancient textiles. Since 1996, the international research group Textiles from the Nile Valley has been studying these Roman, Byzantine and early-Islamic textile artefacts, many of which have found their way into European and North American museum collections.

The research group, consisting of curators, archaeologists, textile conservators and scientists, organises a biennial conference at Katoen Natie HeadquARTers in Antwerp, and publishes a series of unique books on the importance of Egyptian textiles.

This latest volume brings together the findings from the eleventh conference, which was held from 25 to 27 October 2019. The focus is on the history of textile excavating and collecting, which goes back to the late nineteenth century.

The book contains eighteen text contributions describing recent fieldwork, conservation treatments and scientific research worldwide, in collaboration with major universities and museums such as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.

The book is being published to mark the twelfth international scientific Textiles from the Nile Valley Conference, which is taking place from 12 to 14 November 2021 in Antwerp.
