Synopsis

This publication, part artist book part catalogue, presents the work by Simryn Gill, who has been selected to represent Australia at the 55th International Art Exhibition, Venice Biennale 2013. Simryn Gill was born in Singapore in 1959. She now lives and works in Sydney, Australia and in Port Dickson, Malaysia. The Sydney-based artist, who works across multiple media, will be the sole artist exhibiting at the Australian Pavilion in the Giardini in June 2013. The exhibition will be curated by Catherine de Zegher; joint Artistic Director of the 18th Biennale of Sydney in 2012. Simryn Gill has had solo exhibitions at several art institutions and museums throughout the world.
"Simryn is an artist with a unique vision informed by the focused lens of culture and of geography. Her perspective shifts and morphs around themes of place, history and memory, providing fresh insights at their point of intersection. At this important time in the history of Australia when we are forging new ties with our geographic region, Simryn's practice as an artist working across borders provides one model of practice that is a profound and eloquent statement about engagement." Professor Ted Snell, Chair, Visual Arts Board, Australia Council for the Arts.
