This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, cuyo verdadero nombre era Gustavo Adolfo Domínguez Bastida, se trasladó de Sevilla, donde nació en 1836, a Madrid para dedicarse a la literatura. Padeció tuberculosis y vivió en la penuria económica hasta que le nombraron censor de novelas y director literario de La ilustración de Madrid. Entre sus obras en prosa destacan textos como Cartas desde mi celda y Cartas literarias a una mujer, escritas en el monasterio de Veruela. Sin embargo, la cúspide de su producción se da con sus Rimas y sus Leyendas, de las que se desprende el lúgubre y sublime espíritu posromántico. Murió en Madrid, en 1870, dejando tras de sí una estela literaria cuya influencia no tiene parangón en la historia de la literatura en lengua castellana.
