Susan Elbaum Jootla, born in New York City in 1945, earned both her B.A. and M.A. degrees in Library Science from the University of Michigan. In 1970, she and her husband, Balbir S. Jootla, began practicing Vipassana meditation in the tradition of Sayagyi U Ba Khin. They reside in the Western Himalayan hill station of Dalhousie, India.
