This booklet contains two essays: Four Sublime States by Ven. Nyanaponika Thera and The Practice of Loving-Kindness by Ven. Nanamoli Thera. The four sublime states , known as the brahmavihara are the lofty mental states of love, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity. Ven. Nyanaponika gives a brief description of all four with a section of contemplation exercises for each. He concludes with a section on the inter-relationship of all four. Ven. Nanamoli's essay focuses on the basic brahmavihara of metta, translating for us in his lucid style the key passages from the Pali Canon in which the Buddha taught the practice of metta.

Venerable Ñāṇasatta Mahāthera, born Martin Novosad on January 25, 1908, in Vizovice, Moravia, was a Czechoslovakian Theravāda Buddhist monk and scholar. His journey into Buddhism began in 1935 when, influenced by his wife, he developed an interest in the teachings of the Buddha. This newfound passion led him to Sri Lanka in 1938, where he became a disciple of the renowned German-born monk, Venerable Nyanatiloka Mahathera. Under his guidance, Novosad was ordained as a monk, adopting the name Ñāṇasatta.
Bhikkhu Ñāṇamoli (1905–1960) was a British-born Theravāda Buddhist monk, best known for his exceptional translations of Pali Buddhist texts into English. Born as Osbert John S. Moore in England, he studied at Exeter College, Oxford, before serving in the British Army during World War II.
Nyanatiloka Mahathera (1878–1957) was a German Buddhist monk and one of the first Westerners to be ordained as a Theravāda Buddhist monk. Born as Anton Gueth in Germany, he developed an early interest in Eastern philosophy and eventually traveled to Sri Lanka, where he was ordained as a bhikkhu in 1903.
