The area of the southern Peloponnese known as 'the Mani' is a special place. Its location on the fringes of southern Europe, its turbulent history and its rugged, natural beauty all combine to give the visitor an unforgettable experience. This book was written to help find an itinerary to suit all tastes as the area has so much to offer -- unspoilt sandy beaches and secluded coves, medieval forts and Byzantine churches, unexcavated ancient settlements, and mountain villages where time seems to have stood still. Additionally, the whole peninsula is punctuated with the architectural phenomena of its renowned tower houses. By dividing the area into seven, colour-coded sections and providing a detailed index, the book has been designed to enable the reader to quickly find what they are looking for, whether it s for a single day out in a hired car or a tailor-made holiday. Features: introduction on history, tower houses and church frescos; user-friendly - seven, colour-coded sections help quickly plan an itinerary; road maps for each section; detailed village maps, including Stoupa, Kardamyli and Agios Nikolaos; accommodation sections throughout for the independent traveller; a continuous walking route from one end of the peninsula to the other. Nine walks in total; a guide to both Kalamata and ancient Messene.
Matthew Dean first came to the Mani in 1989 and has lived here full-time since 2000. During this time he has had a number of jobs including guiding walking groups in the area and working as a travel rep in Kardamyli. He has now settled happily into publishing, producing the annual Inside the Mani magazine since 2004 as well as two walking guides. This is the second edition of the full Inside the Mani guide.
