Hardcover. Etat : As New. Etat de la jaquette : As New. 1st Edition. Book is in excellent condition. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. Small price tag on back cover. The focus is on Ji Yun's (1724-1805) 'Random Jottings at the Cottage of Close Scrutiny', but extensive referenceis also made to other collectionspublished at about the same timeand earlier works in the genre, from the Six Dynasties down to the Ming. Indidivual chapters deal with the prefacespenned by the compilers, which reveal a variety of motivesbehind the compiling efforts; the ongoing tradition of conversational narratives, which constitutesa context for understanding eigteeth-centurytales; the ideological nature of the stories, manipulated by both sceptics and supernaturalists to present views on the existence of ghosts and fox-spirits; and the attempts made by storytellers to recast the storiesin the prevalent modes of intellectual discourse in the late Qianlong era.
