To date Chinese figural paintings have not been given the attention that two other genres - landscapes and 'flower and bird' paintings - have enjoyed. The collection described and profusely illustrated in this catalogue consists of 50 examples of the works of Ming and Qing literati as well as court and professional artists. Subjects include illustrations of historical accounts, myths and legend, religious figures, immortals, beauties, children and scholar-gentlemen, seasonal practices and traditional customs. Together they demonstrate the richness of this somewhat underappreciated genre. Formats include albums, traditional vertical scrolls, and hand-scrolls, the latter illustrated in multiple fold-out pages.
