"It's us or them"(Abd al-Qader al-Husseini, 1948)The night between 7 and 8 April 1948 was particularly dark. After two in the morning, the sounds of gunfire in the battle over Mount Castel, the summit dominating the road from the coastal plain to Jerusalem, subsided. Abd al-Qader al-Husseini, the revered Palestinian commander of the al-Jihad al-Muqaddis units, felt that his men's assault on the reoccupation of the mountain had stopped.Abd al-Qader, tense and tired, decided to go up to the mountain himself, almost unaccompanied, to find out what had happened. A little after four in the morning, near the top of the mountain, he approached - apparently mistakenly - to the command post of the Moriah Battalion of the Haganah units of Jerusalem, where he was hit by a bundle and killed. His fall in the Battle of Castel, and the events that took place that fateful day, marked the turning point that led to the Jewish victory in the Palestinian campaign and defeat.
