Synopsis

Yurii Mezhenko, a Ukrainian librarian, book critic, and literary scholar, said of him: "We will be waiting for such a poet in our lives for a long time, and God help us to wait." Yevhen Pluzhnyk (1898-1936) was an iconic figure of the post-revolutionary Ukrainian intelligentsia. A poet, playwright, and translator, he was outside of politics in his poetry and belonged to those unique individuals who were given the ability to see the whole world from the comfort of their own room. He did not throw out anti-Soviet slogans, did not engage in political polemics, and never thought of being a communist. His rejection of a reality that denied eternal values, such as human life and love, along with his calls to resist blind cruelty, made him a hero of the Ukrainian Executed Renaissance and a victim of Stalinist terror.
