In Septmeber 1615. Sir Thomas Roe stepped off the Lion at the Indian port of Surat and began his four-year appointment as Engalnd's first ambassador to the court of the Great Mughal. Roe's Perceptions and observations of Mughal India, cornerstones to early modern Indian historiography, are examined here from the perspective of seventeenth century Jacobean values and means of expression.
