Synopsis

Free will is a widely debated subject and, despite so many inquiries, a commonly accepted resolution is still missing. This essay begins by inspecting a number of philosophical arguments which seem to converge toward the fact that free will is an impossible object. The investigations then turn to biological evidence which also points out that free will cannot exist in an absolute sense but there is still room for a freedom potential which can be exploited by individuals to consciously exert choices. While the unconscious mind indeed plays an important role in the decisions we make, the interpretations denying free will based on neuroscience experiments appear to be doubtful, if not mistaken. Reason and will, the eternal cycle between our conscious and unconscious minds, are the chisel and hammer that shaped us. And thus, by the power of our will, we carve the shore of our existence.
