Synopsis

Detailed cultural history of paper, including contemporary paper art - authoritative and well researched, yet approachable and highly entertaining. Paper technology originated in China some two millennia ago, from where it spread east, to Korea and Japan, and west, along the Silk Road to Central Asia, eventually reaching Europe in the 13th century. As the technology propagated, paper effected profound changes in each society it touched, becoming one of the most important of all cultural media, a status that it retains to the present. In one or many of its manifestations, paper affects the lives of all on earth today. In this cultural history of paper, acclaimed paper artist Therese Weber travels to the few remaining places where traditional methods of paper making have been preserved. Starting there, Weber takes the reader on a fascinating and colourful journey of discovery of a commodity that many may take for granted, but few fully understand. Presented in seven chapters, Weber presents the origins and dissemination of paper production in every part of the world, discusses specific uses for paper, referring in detail to subjects such as paper money, paper as a cover for the body, shifu and applications relating to architecture and, in the final chapter, introduces contemporary artists who have played a role in modern 'paperism', including Robert Rauschenberg, David Hockney, Winifred Lutz, Dorothea Reese-Heim and Franz Gertsch.
