METU Faculty of Architecture, 2018. Paperback. New. 17x24 cm. In English. xiv, 220 p. During the 1960s and the 1970s the concept of 'environment' has largely replaced those of God, Nature and Man which dominated the sciences, arts and philosophy as well as architectural and urban thinking in the past... This study presents the first ever comprehensive critique of this development from without its closed circle, refusing to accept many given terms and definitions. To cope with such a complex and controversial field a method of 'discourse analysis' appropriate to the task had to be developed doing justice to the verbal, non-verbal and the graphical sign systems involved. The objects, structures, mechanisms, status and the effects of the 'environmental discourse' have been analysed in great detail relating discursive events to various social, historical, institutional and 'bricks-and-mortar' developments.
