John Marquis is an award-winning British journalist who has worked on newspapers and magazines for more than 40 years. He has been an investigative reporter, international sports writer, Fleet Street sub-editor and editor of books, magazines and newspapers during a career which has included two long spells in the Bahamas, where he now works as Managing Editor of The Tribune, the nation's leading daily.
Marquis has worked for several large news organisations, including Reuters and Thomson Newspapers, and his byline has appeared in many leading publications, including The Scotsman, the London Evening Standard, The Boston Globe and the now defunct Washington Evening Star.
As London Sports Editor of Thomson Regional Newspapers, he covered boxing around the world, including several Muhammad Ali fights, during the 1970s and 1980s. In 1974, he was voted Provincial Journalist of the Year in the British National Press Awards for exposing child death scandals at British hospitals.
In the mid-1980s, after spells as editor of business, media and lifestyle magazines, he was appointed Editor of Packet Newspapers in Cornwall, England, where he stayed for 13 years. In 1999, he moved to the Bahamas as Managing Editor of The Tribune, overseeing a 70 per cent circulation increase in seven years. This marked a return to the Bahamas, because he was political reporter there during the late 1960s, when he worked for both The Tribune and its morning rival, the Nassau Guardian.
Marquis was described by a London news agency chairman as "one of the great unexploited talents of British journalism." He and his wife Joan have eight children and divide their lives between the Bahamas and Cornwall. He is now writing a biography of Dr Francois 'Papa Doc' Duvalier, dictator of Haiti between 1957-71.
