Synopsis

International Seabed Authority’s workshop in collaboration with the University of Szczecin developed a framework for regional environmental management plans (REMPs) for polymetallic sulphide deposits on mid-ocean ridges. With a wide range of experts and representatives from a range of stakeholder groups, workshop participants identified the goals and objectives of regional environmental management plans, consideration for REMP designs, principles for areas of particular environmental interest and knowledge gaps. During the workshop, the main goals identified for the Clarion- Clipperton Zone-Environmental Management Plan (CCZ-EMP) are relevant for mid-ocean ridge systems including the primary goal of facilitating seabed mining while maintaining biodiversity, protecting unique and representative habitats, and preserving ecosystem function through both area-based management tools (ABMTs) and non-ABMTs (e.g. rules-based management measures).
