Synopsis

This book seeks to contribute a new perspective to contemporary policy discourse in Singapore: classical liberalism, which emphasises the importance of epistemic humility, dispersed knowledge noninterventionism, and polycentricity in institutional arrangements. This perspective will bear on old and current debates such as the implications of Asian values, meritocracy & elitism, the recent attention placed on environmental protection, as well as the growing concern about socio-economic disparities in Singapore. It will show that Singaporean policy discourse has proceeded in a binary fashion, involving the dominant perspective led by the incumbent People's Action Party (PAP) and the newer paradigm on the left led by academics, media professionals, and anti-establishment political figures. We aim to shift the debate from this binary, political level of analysis to a higher, institutional level of analysis which explores the appropriate mix of state-market relations necessary to tackle policy challenges. We present a positive vision recommending institutions that promote choice, competition, and diversity, addressing the legitimate concerns of both sides while transcending the current discourse.
