Synopsis

It's enjoyable to dip into, with surprisingly large coverage of Dyson's personal domestic and family matters. It is a fine testament to his longevity, energy and generosity of spirit. - Contemporary Physics

Freeman Dyson has designed nuclear reactors and bomb-powered spacecraft; he has studied the origins of life and the possibilities for the long-term future; he showed quantum mechanics to be consistent with electrodynamics and started cosmological eschatology; he has won international recognition for his work in science and for his work in reconciling science to religion; he has advised generals and congressional committees. An STS (Science, Technology, Society) curriculum or discussion group that engages topics such as nuclear policies, genetic technologies, environmental sustainability, the role of religion in a scientific society, and a hard look towards the future, would count itself privileged to include Professor Dyson as a class participant and mentor. In this book, STS topics are not discussed as objectified abstractions, but through personal stories.

The reader is invited to observe Dyson's influence on a generation of young people as they wrestle with issues of science, technology, society, life in general and our place in the universe. The book is filled with personal anecdotes, student questions and responses, honest doubts and passions.

Revue de presse

What Neuenschwander's students learn at the end of the day is a habit of thoughtfulness toward the scientific and technological world in which they live. Dear Professor Dyson is not a template for life nor a model for a course on science and technology, but rather an inspiration that enlivens and enriches our lives. --Don Lemons, Emeritus Professor, Bethel College, Indiana

In this fascinating book, readers will find exchanges between students and the 'master,' which is reminiscent of the Socratic method. There are a variety of Dyson's reflections; these range from reasons for hating and loving science, environmental issues, and the militarization of the economy, science, and religion. The chapter headings are catchy, and the interspersed comments by the editor are appropriate. This book is worth having at home for periodic perusal and certainly belongs in libraries visited by physics students. Summing Up: Recommended. All readers. --CHOICE

Some of Dyson's letters are particularly interesting such as his discussion on the nature of scientists and their work and creative methods compared to those in other areas like the arts, and one in which he writes about the difficulty of acting in a war-time setting in what in hindsight he realizes could have been a more correct and moral manner. Dyson is an excellent writer and a brilliant scientist. Much interesting material is presented in the book. --Forum on Physics and Society
