Synopsis

"surprisingly funny and insightful" - The BookLife Prize
"Vern digs deep into the brooding and insightful Haee, a feline with few expectations for his modest life—and who longs to be both invisible and seen." - BookLife Review
"witty and deeply philosophical… We will never look at felines the same way again after reading this moving novel." - rated 5 stars by Readers’ Favorite

In an age of comfort where one must confront a quieter truth: that meaning may not lie in transcendence or the extraordinary experience, but in accepting the imperfect, “middling” life that was previously dismissed.
From an award-winning illustrated book series to a literary novel, R.S. Vern’s philosophical cat navigates a world of equally restless souls, moving from a life of comfortable “middling” dissatisfaction to finding purpose in the city’s alleys, connection in fleeting relationships, and mental salvation on an empty prairie.
His search for belonging becomes a profound, meditative exploration of what it means to be truly alive in a transient world.

À propos de l'auteur

R.S. Vern is the author of an award-winning illustrated book trilogy series, "Haee and the Other Middlings." Part One of this series, "Haee The Cat with a Crooked Tail," won the International IndieReader Discovery Award in 2013. In March 2025, Vern did a writer's residency in rural Japan. There, she developed and elaborated on the narrative of "Haee and the Other Middlings," crafting it as a literary fiction novel. As an outsider in rural Japan, she quietly observed the ordinary and understated middling lives of the community with thoughtful fascination. She unearthed a captivating tale within the unexpected city library and a 1,300-year-old onsen, drawing inspiration from the dignified coffee shop owners, the imperfect sushi chefs, the contrite tofu ladies, the extremely mindful farmers, and the suspicious neighborhood cats. The world of middlings takes a meaningful jab at middle class poignancy of the 21st century and provides a delightful read at what it means to be functioning, breathing, and living as we are today, all through the eyes of an ingenious cat. R.S. Vern holds a B.A. in English Literature, an M.A. in Communications, and a G.D. in Applied Positive Psychology.
