Synopsis

In one week, a mediator was accused twice. On Tuesday a country manager said he had gone native. On Friday a community leader pointed at him in an assembly and called him the company's man. Both were certain. Both were wrong. That is the job.

If you work in the space between an industrial project and the people who live where it operates, you know that place. The company expects you to keep the project moving. The community expects you to protect what matters to them. Both expectations are legitimate, both are partly opposed, and you are the human point where they meet.

Standing in the Middle is a field companion for that person. It hands you one hundred practical moves, each one short enough to read before a meeting and concrete enough to use that same afternoon. Not theory, not frameworks: the small, specific things experienced practitioners do almost without thinking, and that nobody ever writes down. How you take notes. When you stay silent. What you do with the first sign of tension. How you deliver a refusal. Where you record a promise so it survives your own departure.

The practices are drawn from two decades of fieldwork and thousands of grievances, negotiations, and difficult rooms. They are arranged in five parts, one for each competency the work demands:

  • Communication and facilitation: listen so people tell you the truth, speak so they actually understand you, and run a room so it goes somewhere.
  • Interest and need management: find what really moves people beneath what they demand, surface the voices that carry risk when ignored, and turn a felt need into a term you can negotiate.
  • Process management: design a presence that earns trust, manage the company side, work with government, deliver hard news without losing the room, and hand the work over well.
  • De-escalation: cool a room in real time, manage rumor, handle the flashpoints of extractive work, and regulate the one instrument you cannot replace, yourself.
  • Accountability and transparency: track commitments, run grievances people believe in, keep institutional memory, and make trust a structure people can inspect.

Each practice closes with a single boxed line, marked In the field, that distills the move into something you can carry into the room. A Practitioner's Quick Index lists all one hundred on a few pages, and the Crisis Pages point you to the handful that matter most when a meeting is boiling over, a protest has started, or you have bad news to deliver in person.

Who this book is for: community liaison and social performance officers, community relations advisers, grievance and resettlement leads, mediators, and the consultants, NGO field staff, and government liaisons who work at the company-community interface.

This is the field companion of the Social Accord Architecture reference library, the discipline Thomas Gaultier developed to treat company-community engagement as carefully engineered infrastructure: as rigorously designed and durably maintained as the road, the pit, or the processing plant.

About the author: Thomas Gaultier is a mediator and lawyer who has mediated thousands of community claims across Sub-Saharan Africa and Europe, served as a community and social performance officer on a lithium project in Portugal, and trained some of the world's largest mining groups in conflict prevention and resolution. He is admitted to the New York Bar, teaches negotiation and mediation at the Universidade Catolica Portuguesa, and is the author of Mediating Extractive Conflicts, The Human Shock Absorber, and When the Mine Arrives.

The discomfort of the middle is not your failure. It is the job.
