This story was written by Samad Behrangi (1939-1968), a teacher in the rural villages in a province in Iran. His short stories were about powerless people; poor and ignored, who had to survive in very difficult conditions which for the most part were a result of a political system that did not care for the people. These conditions were not different from existing ones in many countries in the world today, and in Africa in particular.The Little Black Fish in this children's book represents courage and desire for knowledge, against age old ignorance and fear even if in the end one may have to pay a high price. Children and young people generally will love this story and will not miss the message that it carries.

Little Black Fish may be small, but he has big questions and a determination to find answers to them. While his fellow fish are too scared to do anything different from their set routine, Little Black Fish swims over the edge of the pool, into the stream and river which will show him much more of the world. He meets wonders and adventures, dangers and beauty. He makes it all the way to the sea, and finds his answers. Even though he doesn t survive to tell his own story, here it is being told to another generation, and the inspiration of it is passed on.
