Synopsis

“Norms of Academic Writing” visualizes the current era of information overload, where students do not want to read long texts and yet they falsely purport to have the ability to grasp detailed research understanding while walking, listening to music, talking with friends, eyes mostly glued to their mobile phone screens, and playing on social media!
It is no surprise, therefore, that in all Universities all over the world, you will see a Student Help Office called: The Writing Center. The Writing Center helps students to master the art of writing proper scholarly papers, and write well.
That is the objective of this small book. I approach this goal by taking just one of the several academic writing courses in the Universities called: Students’ Project, or Long Essay. I draw heavily from my personal professional experience when I was a Lecturer in the University of Education, Winneba, in Ghana.
The methodology for this constructive research on error analysis is simple:

  1. Conceptualize the writing project as a complete locker.
  2. Identify all the shelves within the locker.
  3. Show how to fill, stack up, or arrange stuff on the shelves so that the locker looks good.
In other words, as a student, how should I arrange my thoughts prior to writing my first Long Essay or Project Work as they call it?
This is a research paper on Error Analysis in Foreign Language Acquisition. Level 400 students from 2010-2012 in the Department of French of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) who take Research Methods as a compulsory course prior to beginning their final year research-project. The writer served as Academic Supervisor to ten students in level 400, six of whom completed their long essays in French of fifty pages and above. The challenges of academic writing to communicate effectively that the students’ works exposed led the writer to a rhetorical question to wit, how could I help not only my students but also all struggling students in level 400 to inculcate the lessons that this book advances? From the title page and declarations, through the abstract, table de matières, chapter one, chapter two, chapter three, chapter four, chapter five, references and bibliography, the writer offers pertinent guidelines that, when thoroughly implemented, will surely help level 400 students to imbibe proper norms of academic-writing for effective communication and to produce intellectual long research essays of acceptable international standards.
