THE MALTESE ADVENTURER is the biography of James Martin, who in the 1800s struggled with dyslexia and the social blocks of his homeland Malta. The French had been thrown out of the country and together with them the universal education system they introduced. Education for all in Malta took another 50 years to get started, in which time a battle over language and content had stopped all progress. Martin was left illiterate but his dyslexia gave him other amazing abilities of language and memory. He was mesmerised by ships and left his home land to encounter adventures and dangers on the high seas, arrived by accident in East Africa, an environment in which he thrived. In addition to his own adventures, his life tracks the beginnings of the westernisation of Obama’s tribe, he was one of the first white men to discover Obama’s people, he was the first wild game or white hunter, founded Nairobi and went on to administer a vast area of Africa for the British. His life sheds light on issues that we still see affecting Africa today, among them slavery, tribal conflict and consequences of colonialism. Insights into the later wars in Europe are also glimpsed from their beginnings in Africa. This most interesting life and era help to put subsequent history into perspective. The excite-ment of an explorer in Africa and his personal conflicts and short-comings, are tied to the threads of some events that shaped our world today. Martin’s personal battles portray a truly human and touching character, showing how his Maltese DNA succeeded in another world. He was one of the greatest Maltese adventurers.
