Siberian-born Nicholas Kalashnikoff spent four years of his adult life in the region while under political exile. During that period, he participated in an expedition to the far north setting for The Defender. Kalashnikoff became an American citizen in 1930 and wrote several books for adults and chlidren.
This Newbery Honor Book recounts a timeless tale of a shepherd's devotion to the wild mountain rams of his native Siberia and his determination to protect them from the predations of hunters.
