Synopsis

"Our Little Danish Cousin" by Luna May Innes is a charming exploration of Danish culture and history through the experiences of young Valdemar and his American cousin, Karl. The narrative begins with the anticipation of a visit from Valdemar's uncle, Thorvald Svensen, a renowned sculptor returning from Rome, and Karl's father, Oscar Hoffman, who is visiting from America. The story unfolds in Copenhagen, where the children are introduced to the city's rich history and vibrant culture. They visit iconic landmarks such as the Round Tower and the Thorvaldsen Museum, where Valdemar's passion for sculpture is ignited by his uncle's encouragement. The narrative is set against the backdrop of Denmark's royal traditions, as the children witness the arrival of King Haakon of Norway, an event that highlights the close ties between the Scandinavian countries. The story also delves into the Danish love for nature, as the family embarks on a journey to the countryside, experiencing the beauty of the beech-woods during "Deer-Park-time." This journey is not only a physical one but also a cultural exploration, as the children learn about Denmark's historical significance and its contributions to art and literature. Innes weaves a tale that is both educational and entertaining, providing readers with a glimpse into the daily life and customs of Denmark. The book emphasizes the importance of family, tradition, and the arts, making it a delightful read for young audiences interested in learning about different cultures.
