Archer Butler Hulbert, FRGS, géographe historique, écrivain et professeur d'histoire américaine, fils du révérend Calvin Butler Hulbert et de Mary Elizabeth Woodward, est né à Bennington, Vermont. Son père est devenu plus tard président du Middlebury College. Hulbert a été marié deux fois.

The study of this stream is of intense andspecial interest to many classes of people, notably historians, archæologistsbotanists, geologists, artists, mechanics, and electricians. It is doubtful ifthere is anywhere another thirty-six miles of riverway that can, in thisrespect, compare with it.The term 'strait' as applied to the Niagara correctly suggests the river'shistoric importance. The expression, recurring in so many of the relationsof French and English military officers, 'on this communication' alsoindicates Niagara's position in the story of the discovery, conquest, andoccupation of the continent. It is probably the Falls which, technicallymake Niagara a river; and so, in turn, it is the Falls that rendered Niagaraan important strategic key of the vast waterway stretching from the mouthof the St. Lawrence to the head of Lake Superior. The lack¿so far as it doesexist¿of historic interest in the immediate Niagara region, the comparativepaucity of military events of magnitude along that stream during the oldFrench and the Revolutionary wars proves, on the one hand, what awilderness separated the English on the South from the French on theNorth, and, on the other, how strong 'the communication' was betweenQuebec and the French posts in the Middle West.
