Isaac Laquedem, the first in a new Classical Dumas Series, was, in the author's words, "the capital work of my life." Taking him two decades to write, and, unlike works such as The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers, without any collaboration, he thought that it would one day rival such works as Homer's Iliad and Virgil's Aeneid. In Isaac Laquedem, the history of the world is unfolded through the eyes of the Wandering Jew. The first volume opens on Maundy Thursday, 1469, when a mysterious, strangely dressed traveller enters Rome by the Appian Way, a learned polyglot who is incredibly strong and apparently invulnerable.
