I Said Goodbye
Acclaimed Korean novelist Kim Ae-ran returns with her first short story collection in eight years since Outside, It’s Summer. I Said Goodbye includes seven intricately crafted short stories, such as “Home Party,” which won the 2022 Kim Seung-ok Literary Award for Excellence, and “Good Neighbors,” the recipient of the 2022 Oh Young-su Literary Prize. This new collection showcases Kim’s signature ability to sharply capture the emotional particles floating through social space and give them lucid expression—yet with a tone that is colder and more unsparing than before. In I Said Goodbye, the true protagonist might be space itself. As one line from “Home Party” states, “Many plays begin with an invitation or visit, an intrusion or escape.” Each story unfolds as characters enter someone else’s space: A tastefully curated home revealing its owner’s elegance and ease (“Home Party”), A detached house abroad enabling a rare “luxury” month-long stay thanks to affordable prices (“The Small House in the Forest”), A rented apartment, lovingly maintained but now to be vacated for a new tenant (“Good Neighbors”), And even a bookstore, opened with all the savings after quitting a job (“Lemon Cake”). For Kim Ae-ran, these spaces are not mere backdrops—they are equivalent to the characters’ lives themselves. Known for her insight into the meaning of a single room in Korean society, she portrays each setting as a condensed and complex representation of an individual’s economic and personal history. Thus, conflicts surrounding these spaces become confrontations between different standards of living, different lives. Entering another person’s space becomes, in essence, an act of stepping beyond the boundary of one’s own life. Through these layered and emotionally resonant stories, Kim Ae-ran invites readers to consider what it means to share—or trespass—upon the lives of others.
