Synopsis

Developing innovative businesses during an economic paradigm shift requires a high level of creativity and innovation. This book sets itself apart by viewing entrepreneurs who introduce novel businesses as pioneers who drive economic advances, particularly in the economic transition times. The concept of entrepreneurship is redefined with merchants, innovators, and organizers’ spirit, reflecting the business characteristics in the intelligent economy and beyond.

The ecosystem in biology balances and evolves through interaction, cooperation, and competition among members. The business model focuses more on cooperation, collaboration, and reciprocity, while strategy focuses more on the competition. This book explores new business model approaches in the intelligent economy and beyond from a business ecosystem perspective by developing frameworks for insights, idea generation, and business model design. Digital and intelligent technologies provide various opportunities and options to organize new business models through connection and automated or autonomous operations.

Every business requires a business model, whether it is explicitly defined or not. The business model organizes resources, participants, activities, and customers to create, deliver, and capture superior values by building a cooperative relationship and maintaining harmony with the environment. The business model framework comprises five modules: value proposition model, market organizing model, value system model, value appropriation model, and ecosystem interface model. Discussion on business model design in this book includes three different scopes: individual business, inter-organizational business system, and ecosystem. This book also deals with the extension of hybrid business model applications in the social and semi-public sectors as new business development territories.

Section Ⅰ discusses the economic paradigm shift as an introduction to this book, including economic history, industry structure change, and the rise and fall of businesses. Section Ⅱ deals with new business insights and the idea generation process. It presents the Change(technology)-Business model-Economic model Framework to explain the relationship between these terms. This section also discusses human psychological features affecting idea generation and business model development, including business model thinking and entrepreneurship. Business model thinking bridges generated ideas to business model design. Section Ⅲ addresses the business model in earnest, including its concepts, components, modules, designs, and experimentations. The Business Model Pentagon and Business Model Design Board are presented as new frameworks to access the business model design and analysis. Section Ⅳ addresses the issues related to using and managing business models, including business launching process, business model management, and viable business models. The Appendix explains how to use the design frameworks and templates presented in this book in practice with several fictional stories with different design scopes of individual businesses, inter-organizational business systems, and ecosystems.
