Questo libro racconta la storia d’amore tra John Ruskin (1819-1900) e Venezia. Durante la sua vita, il celebre critico inglese visitò la città sull’acqua, a partire dal 1835. Da quel momento, in circa cinquant’anni, tornò per ben undici volte mettendo Venezia al centro dei suoi studi e della sua vita. Da questa relazione intellettuale e sentimentale nacque il celebre libro Pietre di Venezia, l’opera in tre volumi che racconta la storia della città, della sua bellezza, della sua unicità e della sua fragilità. L’opera diventerà una pietra miliare della cultura anglosassone, del revival gotico dell’Ottocento e di ogni studioso che si approccia a Venezia. Meno noto, invece, è il grande talento di Ruskin come disegnatore e acquerellista che emerge nelle vedute veneziane e nei dettagli architettonici dei palazzi, delle chiese, di piazza San Marco e di Palazzo Ducale. L’enorme corpus di lavori che ne scaturisce è conservato oggi in musei e collezioni di tutto il mondo.
