Andare oltre i canoni stabiliti, alla costante ricerca di una nuova libertà espressiva. È il mondo creativo di Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011), una delle figure più influenti del movimento artistico americano del XX secolo, celebre per il suo innovativo approccio all’arte e per il ruolo fondamentale nella transizione dall’Espressionismo astratto alla pittura Color Field. In occasione della mostra Helen Frankenthaler. Dipingere senza regole, organizzata dalla Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi e dalla Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, aperta al pubblico dal 27 settembre 2024 al 25 gennaio 2025, Marsilio Arte pubblica il catalogo a cura di Douglas Dreishpoon, direttore dell’Helen Frankenthaler Catalogue Raisonné. Celebre tra la seconda generazione di pittori astratti americani del dopoguerra, Frankenthaler è emersa sulla scena artistica americana, con un approccio alla pittura senza regole e una capacità di improvvisazione che hanno ridisegnato la narrazione del genere pittorico stesso. Con la sua innovativa tecnica a macchie, Frankenthaler ha esplorato un nuovo rapporto tra colore e forma, ampliando il potenziale della pittura astratta in modi che, ancora oggi, continuano a ispirare gli artisti. Una selezione di dipinti e di sculture, prodotti tra il 1953 e il 2002, dialoga con le creazioni di artisti coevi, tra cui Anthony Caro, Morris Louis, Robert Motherwell, Kenneth Noland, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, David Smith, Anne Truitt. Il catalogo Helen Frankenthaler. Dipingere senza regole, che accompagna la grande retrospettiva, esamina le affinità artistiche, le influenze e le amicizie della pittrice. Il cuore del volume sono i contributi di Douglas Dreishpoon con interessanti accostamenti tra opere di Frankenthaler e di altri artisti con cui aveva rapporti, in particolare David Smith, Anne Truitt e Anthony Caro.
