Synopsis

La nuova versione del volume Musca Depicta, stampato da Franco Maria Ricci nel 1984, viene presentata in concomitanza con la mostra omonima al Labirinto della Masone dedicata al tema della presenza della mosca nell’arte. Il libro si apre con un saggio della curatrice Sylvia Ferino-Pagden, che racconta l’apparizione della mosca nelle arti visive, tanto diversa quanto enigmatica, elaborando un percorso che si muove tra opere in mostra e rimandi esterni. La mosca in alcuni casi vuole simboleggiare il diavolo, in altri appare come un arguto camuffamento dell'artista; il suo ruolo nelle vanitas e nelle nature morte è piuttosto evidente. In continuità con le precedenti tradizioni, l'arte contemporanea celebra l'importanza della mosca "inutile". A questo segue il fondamentale saggio di André Chastel, il punto di partenza più completo per qualsiasi studio di storia dell'arte sull'argomento, e il testo di Carlo Ossola, che rintraccia la presenza di mosche nella letteratura raccogliendo i più significativi brani sul tema. Chiude il volume il saggio di Giuseppe Olmi e Lucia Tongiorgi Tomasi, focalizzato sulla rappresentazione scientifica della mosca. Un ricco apparato iconografico accompagna e valorizza tutti i testi e sfida il lettore in una continua “caccia alla mosca”.

André Chastel (15 November 1912, Paris – 18 July 1990, Neuilly-sur-Seine) was a French art historian, author of an important work on the Italian Renaissance. He was a professor at the Collège de France, where he held the chair of art and civilisation of the Renaissance in Italy, from 1970 to 1984, he was elected a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres in 1975. Sylvia Ferino-Pagden is the former Director of the Picture Gallery at the Kunsthistorisches Museum (KHM, Museum of Art History) in Vienna. She studied Art History at Vienna University and Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. She obtained several research fellowships from Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, St. Hugh’s College in Oxford, Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence and the Bibliotheca Hertziana (Max-Planck-Institute) in Rome. The focus of her career has been the Italian Renaissance and she has been Curator of Italian Renaissance Painting at the KHM since 1988.
