Synopsis

In the context of the eight-hundredth anniversary of the death of Francis of Assisi, this volume offers a reflection on faith as an inspiring and concrete force for the lives of men and women today. Between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the Order of the Templars and the Order of Friars Minor arose as different responses to one and the same evangelical urgency: to serve Christ in the world through poverty, service, and responsibility toward the least among us.The safeguarding of faith, of vocation, and of the most vulnerable became the point of contact between two forms of discipleship that are only seemingly distant.
The first part of the book is a chivalric novel, The Guardianship of the Light (Memoria Custodis Francisci Assisiensis) by Umberto Grieco, which through literary fiction gives voice to the memoirs of an imaginary Templar knight, Sandro De Vettori, charged by God with watching over the life of Francis. A symbolic chronicle, narrated in the first person, that transfigures knighthood into service and guardianship.
The second part is a historical and spiritual reflection by the Magister Templi Mauro Giorgio Ferretti, in dialogue with Mauro Lubrani, enriched by the contributions of Mons. Giovanni D'Ercole and Fra' Alfredo Paladini.
In Francis of Assisi and the Templars, the Middle Ages emerge as an era capable of speaking to the present—inspiring a human experience in which to safeguard, as an expression of authentic faith, means not to possess but to serve for the good of the entire community.
