Synopsis

On January 1, 2027, the catch-up contribution rules change. If you are 50 or over and earn above the threshold, the choice you used to have disappears.

  • The four tests that decide whether the rule catches you
  • Why Box 3 of your Form W-2 decides it, and Box 5 does not
  • The wage threshold year by year, and how it is indexed
  • The age 60-63 super catch-up, and the trap inside it
  • The new Saver's Match: who qualifies, and how it is claimed
  • Twelve worked households, from a first paycheck to a correction
  • Roth or pre-tax: the arithmetic, never a recommendation
  • A toolkit: 45 questions, 20 common mistakes, key dates, glossary, checklists

For years, savers aged 50 and over could add a catch-up contribution to a 401(k), 403(b) or governmental 457(b) plan and choose whether it went in before tax or after tax. From 2027, if your wages last year from the employer that sponsors your plan were above the threshold, the final Treasury regulations say that catch-up can only go in one way: as a designated Roth contribution. Your take-home pay changes. Your tax bill changes. Nobody sends you a letter explaining it.

This book explains it, using your own Form W-2 and your own tax return.

Three things this book does that others do not.

It reads the right box. The final regulations use Box 3 of your Form W-2, not Box 5, and the reason matters: it is why some state and local government employees are outside the rule entirely.

It tells the truth about the date. The statute applied from 2024. A transition period covered 2024 and 2025 and was not extended. So 2026 is the first year the rule actually bites, and 2027 is when the detailed regulations apply. If your 2026 paycheck already changed, you are not imagining it.

It admits what had not been published. Several 2027 figures did not exist when this edition went to print. Rather than guess, the book names every one of them, says which document will carry it, and tells you when to look. That includes the figure of $155,000 that you may have seen quoted as the 2027 threshold. It is not the threshold. It is an assumption the drafters used inside their own worked examples, and this book shows you the sentence it comes from.

Also inside: what actually changes in your paycheck and on your return; the break-even arithmetic for Roth against pre-tax across four tax rates; the knock-on effects on Medicare income-related premiums two years later, on the taxation of Social Security benefits and on required minimum distributions; what happens when a plan gets it wrong, with two correction methods, three deadlines and one rule that means some mistakes are simply left alone; the Saver's Match from the 2027 tax year, with the three income tables and the phase-out arithmetic worked twice; and a full chapter for the person who has to run the plan.

Written in plain English for the person whose paycheck is about to change, not for a benefits lawyer. Every number traces to a federal source: the Treasury and IRS final regulations on catch-up contributions, the Internal Revenue Code, the IRS annual cost-of-living notices, and the IRS guidance on the Saver's Match.
