Synopsis

“Esteem him! Like him! Cold-hearted Elinor! Oh, worse than cold-hearted!”

Esteem is the 91st of 785 words footnoted in this edition. Marianne flings it back at her sister when Elinor will admit only to esteeming Edward Ferrars, and the novel spends the rest of its pages testing which sister has the better word for love. Jane Austen published Sense and Sensibility in 1811, her first novel: the story of Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, left with little money and fewer prospects after their father’s death, one guided by judgment and the other by feeling. This edition gives you the whole novel with every vocabulary word defined on the page where it first appears.

What’s inside. All fifty chapters, complete. The text follows the 1896 Macmillan edition, checked word by word against Austen’s first edition of 1811 and restored to her own wording wherever later editors had changed it. Every vocabulary word is bolded in the text and footnoted the first time it appears, from sanguine and tardy in the opening chapter through gaucherie, philippic, sangfroid, puppyism, and nabob, each defined succinctly, as a vocabulary word rather than an exhaustive dictionary entry. All 785 are gathered again in an alphabetical Vocabulary list at the back.

What’s not inside. No plot summary. No page-cluttering commentary. No need to stop reading and reach for a dictionary: each definition is footnoted on the page where you meet the word.

Who it’s for. High school students meeting Sense and Sensibility in class. Honors and AP English students. SAT and ACT candidates building a working vocabulary from real reading. ESL and EFL learners, and anyone preparing for TOEFL or IELTS. Teachers and homeschooling families who want the text and the vocabulary in one book. And anyone who has met the Dashwood sisters on screen and never in the book.
