In 1848, revolution swept across Europe with extraordinary speed. From the streets of Paris to Vienna, Berlin, Milan, Venice, Prague, and Budapest, demands for political reform, national independence, constitutional government, and greater liberty challenged some of the continent’s most powerful monarchies.
The 1848 Revolutions, remembered as the Springtime of Nations, grew from years of political repression, economic hardship, social unrest, and rising nationalism and liberalism. France witnessed the fall of the July Monarchy and the creation of the Second Republic. Vienna erupted against the conservative order associated with Metternich. Revolution spread through the Austrian Empire as Hungarians, Italians, Czechs, and other peoples pursued competing political and national goals. In the German states, revolutionaries confronted Prussian authority while the Frankfurt Parliament attempted to create a constitutional and unified Germany.
Across nineteenth century Europe, these uprisings raised fundamental questions about who should govern, what rights citizens should possess, and whether Europe's old empires could survive the growing power of nationalism.
In this book you will find:
• The political and economic conditions that brought Europe to the revolutionary crisis of 1848
• The February Revolution in Paris and the collapse of the French July Monarchy
• The creation of the French Second Republic and the violent June Days uprising
• The Vienna Revolution, the fall of Metternich, and the struggle for control of the Austrian Empire
• The Hungarian, Czech, and Italian nationalist movements within Habsburg Europe
• The March Revolution in Berlin and the confrontation between revolutionaries and the Prussian monarchy
• The Frankfurt Parliament and the attempt to unite the German states under a constitutional government
• The revolutions in Milan and Venice and the struggle against Austrian rule in Italy
• Giuseppe Mazzini, the Roman Republic, and the wider movement for Italian national independence
• The revolutionary movements in Prague and Budapest and the spread of the Springtime of Nations
• The relationship between nationalism, liberalism, constitutional reform, and social unrest
• The counterrevolutionary forces that restored monarchical authority across much of Europe
• The reasons the Revolutions of 1848 failed to achieve many of their immediate political goals
• The lasting influence of 1848 on European nationalism, liberal reform, German and Italian unification, and the political transformation of modern Europe
The revolutionary wave of 1848 ended with many of its movements defeated, constitutions restricted or withdrawn, and old governments restored. Yet Europe could not simply return to the political world that had existed before the uprisings. The struggles of Paris, Vienna, Berlin, Budapest, Prague, Milan, Venice, and Rome left questions of national unity, constitutional government, political participation, and imperial authority unresolved.
The 1848 Revolutions places these interconnected events within the wider history of nineteenth century Europe, showing how the Springtime of Nations challenged the European order and helped shape the political conflicts that followed.
