This is the first Halloween twelve-year-old Scott Scarborough gets to choose his own costume, and he wants something genuinely scary. When he visits the local thrift shop, the strange shopkeeper hands him a petrified turnip lantern with a gruesome carved face.

The old man suggests Scott take the lantern and be the legendary Stingy Jack—a notorious trickster and deceiver who was barred from both heaven and the underworld, has been doomed to wander the earth for eternity, and was the inspiration for the modern-day Jack-o’-Lantern.
