Synopsis

Thirteen hundred tons. Four guns. One last fight.

In the summer of 1938, HMS Glowworm is a small, fast destroyer with a new captain and a crew still learning each other. Over the next twenty months she will escort ships through the Spanish Civil War, take two hundred and ninety refugees off a Spanish quay, collide with her own sister in the dark, and spend the first winter of the war chipping ice from her rigging in the North Sea.

Then, in April 1940, three days into a gale off Norway, she turns back to search for a man overboard, and loses her fleet. On the morning of the eighth she meets two German destroyers in the fog. Her captain reports them and gives chase. Behind them, carrying twelve hundred mountain troops toward the invasion of Norway, is the heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper.

What follows takes thirty-six minutes.

The Final Bow follows four men: Gerard Roope, a captain trained since boyhood for exactly this moment; Robert Ramsay, the torpedo officer who will spend five years in a prison camp deciding what he saw; Henry Gregg, an engine-room artificer from Gateshead who sees none of it and has to save everyone he can anyway; and Hellmuth Heye, the German captain who stopped his ship to pull the survivors from the sea and then did something no one required of him.

A deeply researched, moving novel of courage, duty and an enemy's honor, with an author's note and a note on sources that mark exactly where history ends and fiction begins.

Gerard Roope's Victoria Cross was gazetted in July 1945. It was recommended by the man who sank him.
