Synopsis

When Grandpa Gum starts to forget, Kolu learns that love doesn’t.

High in a big eucalyptus tree, Kolu lives with her little brother Ray, Mama and Papa. Every Sunday, Grandpa Gum visits with the silliest songs and the squeeziest hugs. Then Grandpa starts forgetting things: the words to his song, and sometimes even Kolu’s name. One day he tells her, “I might forget your name sometimes, Kolu, but I’ll never forget I love you.”

When Grandpa Gum dies, the Koala Family learns to grieve together. They discover that:

• Every kind of feelings weather is okay: rainy, stormy, foggy, or a little bit of sunshine.
• Grown-ups have feelings too, even when they go quiet.
• It’s never a child’s fault. Nothing Kolu thought, said or did made Grandpa die.
• Love stays. The family plants a Memory Tree and adds a leaf each time they remember him.

Kolu’s Memory Tree is a gentle, honest picture book for children ages 2 to 6 and the grown-ups who love them. It uses clear, real words about death, the way grief counselors recommend for young children. Inside you’ll also find:

• Koala Breaths, a simple calming exercise
• A Feelings Weather page to help little ones name how they feel
• A Memory Leaf to draw or write a memory of someone they love
• Notes for grown-ups on how young children grieve and when to reach out for more help

It’s a comforting choice for families facing the loss of a grandparent or another loved one. It also suits families living with a grandparent’s memory loss, and works well for counselors, preschool teachers and funeral homes supporting young children through loss.
