Synopsis
Starting January 1, 2027, adults covered by Medicaid through the adult group must show 80 hours a month of work, community service, a work program, or school - or show that they are exempt. This book explains the rule in plain English, and shows you exactly what to keep, what to send, and what the deadlines are.
It is built from the source: the Federal Register rule of June 3, 2026, its correction of June 29, 2026, and the regulations as they now stand at 42 CFR 435.550 through 435.563.
What this book gives you that a government web page does not:
- A four-step test for whether the rule applies to you at all - and the ten groups it skips entirely
- All seven ways to meet the requirement in a month, with the arithmetic worked out, including the $580 income route and the rule for seasonal workers
- Fifteen document checklists - one for each activity and each exemption - including what to do when the document does not exist
- The exemption chapters most people need: caregivers (the rules are wider than people think) and medically frail or special medical needs (you do not have to be on disability benefits)
- Your six-month calendar, and the 30-day clock that starts five days after the date on the letter
- Three routes back if you lose coverage, in order, with dates - including the 90-day reconsideration that does not need a new application
- One thing almost nobody explains: why a marketplace plan may not be the fallback you expect
- Ten family stories with month-by-month numbers, a 45-question FAQ, a key-dates calendar, a 73-term glossary, and a worksheet for the twelve decisions your own state makes
Written for two readers at once: the person who has to keep their coverage, and the case manager, navigator, assister or family member helping them. Short sentences. No jargon left undefined. Nothing you have to take on faith - every number is tied to the rule it comes from.
An honest note about states. This rule leaves twelve decisions to each state, and no public source says what any individual state has chosen. This book does not print a state-by-state table, because that table would be guesswork. Instead it teaches you the twelve choices and gives you a worksheet and a phone script so you can get your own state's answers on paper.
This book is general educational information. It is not legal, medical, benefits or tax advice. Only your state Medicaid agency can decide your eligibility. This book is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or approved by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the Department of Health and Human Services, any State Medicaid agency, or any other government body. All examples are fictional.
