Synopsis

An ordinary boy, on an ordinary street, in a family where everyone agreed, without ever saying so, that everything was fine.

It was not fine. At nine, something happened to him that he would carry alone for forty-six years. But this is not only the story of what was done to him. It is the story of what everyone around him did next. They kept talking, laughing, living, as if nothing had changed. And slowly, gently, they taught him to do the same.

There was a language everyone else seemed to have learned as children: the quiet, unwritten rules of how people really speak to one another. He never learned it, and no one ever told him it was missing. So he moved through school, the army and work always half a step behind, certain that the fault was his, never knowing there was a fault at all.

Let's Play Pretend is the story of that hidden language, and of a life spent inside a game everyone was playing but him. It asks a question that becomes harder to bear with every page: how does a whole world look straight at a child, and agree not to see?

Book Two of Asking for My Right.
