Open-source intelligence (OSINT) is most often discussed as a method for
discovering information about others. This book starts from the
opposite premise: using publicly available information to
understand and reduce the digital exposure of assets you are
responsible for—your own accounts, domains, published
documents, services, and organizational footprint.
Defensive OSINT is useful because digital exposure is rarely zero
and almost never static. Old documents linger in archives, former
employees’ contact details remain indexed, forgotten subdomains
still resolve, credentials surface in breach corpora years later, and
metadata travels with files long after the author intended. The
same techniques investigators use to find these things can be
used, under proper authorization, to find them first and decide
what to do about them.
This book is written for readers who are new to structured open-
source research or who need a disciplined, low-risk way to begin.
It prioritizes authorization, scope, evidence hygiene, source
evaluation, and clear limits on what any observation can
establish. Tools appear only after the analytical and ethical
foundation is in place. Every worked example is fictional; every
procedure that was not executed in a controlled environment is
marked as documentation-checked rather than tested.
The goal is not to produce the largest possible collection of
results. It is to produce accountable, reviewable findings that
support decisions: update a brochure, retire a hostname, rotate a
credential, correct an inventory entry, or leave a claim unresolved
because the evidence does not yet support it.
If you follow the sequence in these pages—question first,
authorization second, collection third, verification and analysis
next, then remediation and monitoring—you will have a practical,
defensible method for reducing digital exposure without creating
new risks in the process.
